School Structure

At Whatcom Day Academy, most student groups consist of children of mixed ages. Placement decisions are made based on the social dynamics of the groups and the overall development of individual students. There are several ways in which these groupings benefit children and enhance their educational experiences.

  • Students can experience the safety and sense of belonging that comes from extended relationships with their peers and teachers.

  • Both continuity and change are present in the groups, as some students move on to another group, some stay, and students new to the school enter groups.

  • Students have the opportunity to be the younger child in a group, being helped by older, more experienced classmates; then to be the older child, gaining leadership skills and confidence.

Within these groupings there is usually some overlap of ages. Placements are flexible, and always depend on a developmental emphasis that accommodates the individual needs of students.
